Dr Mark Morunga: The Doctor Behind Magna's Hair Loss Treatment

Updated October 2026 · 7 min read
Every treatment plan Magna issues is reviewed and prescribed by our clinical lead: Dr Mark Morunga. He's the experience and the prescriber on every script, and the reason Magna can say "doctor-led" without the small print. This is who he is, what he's done, why it matters to the man filling in a hair loss assessment at 11pm and what a hair loss doctor in NZ should actually do for him.
Who is Dr Mark Morunga?
Dr Mark Morunga is a New Zealand-registered doctor with over 30 years in medicine and more than a decade focused on hair loss and men's health. He's the founder and medical director of The Hair Clinic, the founder of Essential Men's Clinic, and a director of Face Doctors in Remuera. Through those clinics, he has treated more than 5,000 hair loss patients and thousands of men's health patients across New Zealand.
He has become the clinical lead for Magna, bringing the protocols developed in those clinics to an online service any Kiwi man can use.

Thirty years in medicine, not thirty years in marketing
Dr Morunga's career didn't start in hair loss. It started in the parts of medicine where you see everything.
After graduating from the University of Auckland, he trained in paediatrics and emergency medicine, then spent more than two decades as a physician in East Auckland, including ten years as Clinical Director of the East Care Accident & Medical Clinic. Urgent care is unglamorous, high-volume medicine: you assess fast, you prescribe carefully, and you learn what actually matters in a patient's history.
Those habits are the foundation of how Magna's assessments work today.
His interest in cosmetic medicine began in 2006, with formal training from 2009 and a diploma in 2011. Hair loss sat at the intersection of everything he'd done - medicine, men's health, and the appearance concerns patients rarely raise with their GP - and it became the focus.
The Hair Clinic: a decade of hair loss patients
Dr Morunga founded The Hair Clinic in Remuera, Auckland, and it now runs clinics in Howick, Wellington and Christchurch as well. It's a doctor-led practice built around one condition, and the team has more than ten years of specialised experience in it.
The clinic's range is wider than anything just an online service offers - from PRP, PRF and growth-factor treatments to mesotherapy, Regenera Activa micrografts, PDO threads, laser and red-light therapy, and the prescription medicines that underpin all of it. That breadth matters for Magna patients in two ways.
First, Dr Morunga has seen what works and what doesn't across thousands of cases, with every tool available so when he prescribes finasteride and minoxidil online, it's because the evidence and his own clinical results put them first, not because they're the only thing on the shelf.
Second, it's where the hybrid model comes from. If a Magna patient's hair loss turns out to need in-person assessment such as a scalp that needs examining, a pattern that doesn't fit, Dr Morunga can see them at the clinic instead of sending them back to their GP. Online where online works; in person where it doesn't.
Essential Men's Clinic: men's health since 2012
Dr Morunga also founded Essential Men's Clinic, a men's health practice in Auckland and Christchurch that has offered confidential, clinician-led care since 2012 - covering sexual health, including erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation, alongside hair regrowth and cosmetic medicine.
That's over a decade of sitting across from men who'd put off a conversation for years. It shaped the way Magna is built: a private online assessment first, a phone consultation and no waiting room.
How Dr Morunga's experience shapes Magna
He reviews every assessment
Magna doesn't use a rotating pool of locums or an algorithm with a doctor's name on it. Dr Morunga reads each questionnaire and set of photos and decides whether treatment is appropriate and which one.
The protocols are his
The treatment plans Magna offers such as oral finasteride and minoxidil, topical finasteride and minoxidil, dutasteride, low-dose oral minoxidil are the ones developed and refined at The Hair Clinic over a decade, now available without visiting Remuera.
He says no when he should
Not every hair loss is pattern hair loss, and not every patient is suited to treatment. Patients are referred to a dermatologist or their GP when an online assessment can't determine the cause. That's the difference between a doctor-led service and a sales funnel.
Follow-ups and adjustments are part of the plan
Treatment is reviewed, and if it needs changing such as a different formulation, a different dose, a switch from oral to topical, it's adjusted at no extra cost.
Seeing a hair loss doctor in Auckland - online or in person
Most men searching for a hair loss clinic in Auckland end up in one of two places: a chain clinic with a sales programme, or a GP who sees hair loss a few times a year. Dr Morunga sits in neither category. His practice, The Hair Clinic, is based at 10 St Marks Road in Remuera and it treats hair loss every day, with a doctor making the clinical decisions.
Magna is how that practice reaches the rest of the country. Start online from anywhere in New Zealand and Dr Morunga reviews your assessment and you have a short call with the Magna team; if the doctor decides you need to be examined in person, it's arranged at the clinic rather than referred back to your GP. For a man in Auckland that means a choice: online for convenience, in the clinic if your case needs it. For a man in Dunedin or Tauranga it means a hair loss doctor with a physical practice behind him, without the flight.
What patients can expect
A short online assessment and photos, a phone call, an honest opinion about what's likely to work for your stage of hair loss. If treatment is right for you, a prescription compounded in New Zealand and delivered to your door. And a doctor who's still there at month six.
